This is lengthy since I’m in I.T. and hope that a detailed, non-ranting, review would be helpful to both prospective purchasers and the authors.
I got the desktop app and it’s companion IOS version since I’m on the road with my business. What I started seeing is data loss when I synced the two through iCloud - specifically with recurring invoices. In my case, I bill some clients on the 1st of the month and so Moon Invoice Pro (MIP) generates the invoices and does everything as expected… until I sync the data with the IOS version. When I go to the desktop app, the most recent recurring invoices are gone. They are not in the app’s Trash where one could recover them, they are just gone, like they never happened. If I don’t notice that invoices have been lost by MIP - and who does check that?? and I create other invoices since the recurring ones that were lost, to get the lost ones back, I have to restore before the date I lost them then re-enter the remaining invoices until I’m up to-date again. MIP has an “Append” option on the the restore feature, but that doesn’t work - I’ve tried it numerous times. The only option is to replace the data. The other hint that data has been lost is when you make backups, you can see an almost 2.2MB data loss between the backups during which invoices disappeared.
For the past month I refrained from using the IOS app and entered everything into the desktop app only. No issues - no data loss. As soon as I synced the IOS version, instead of syncing data so the integrity was maintained, it looks like it took what was in the phone (that was 1 month older not having been touched or updated during the test non-sync period) and treated it as equally current as the data that was on the desktop version… that’s the wrong way to do a data sync.
I’ve relayed all of this to MIP’s support people along with screen captures, but their only response was for me to send them copies of the backup data before and after the data loss. I understand that that request makes sense, but that backup data has all of my confidential business information - clients, vendors, notes… not happening. I asked them to send me a utility that would allow me to open the proprietary backup format they use and export just the missing data so I wouldn’t have to rekey it. They refused. To be fair up to this issue, which makes the app almost useless if you want / need to sync the data between 2 or more devices, they have been fairly responsive. On this issue, again data loss is a huge red flag, they provide no options that satisfy the need for data privacy while helping you recover data lost by their app.
I’m discontinuing the use of both apps and will look for a more reliable solution. I realize that the two MIP apps together are cheap compared to the Quick Books, AccountEdge, and similar apps out there, but at the same time you’d expect paid apps to just work. AND, you’d expect that at the very least they would not lose data which is simply inexcusable.
I hope this helps you if you are considering buying this app and its companion IOS app and I hope the authors read it and fix the problems with appending data restores and syncing with IOS.
